A poor family in central province of Ha Tinh is struggling to earn a living and bring up a 13-month-old baby who suffers from heart disease, pneumonia and down syndrome.
Feeling helpless to the baby’s illness
The family is that of 52-year-old Phan Trong Kien, who lives in Hong Loc Commune Yen Giang Hamlet.
Being born in a poor family, Kien got married to a local woman with a simple wedding. Shortly after their marriage, his wife died.
In 2009 Kien remarried, with a woman named Nguyen Thi Thu. They had two children, Phan Thi My and Phan Trong Chung. Their life has become more desperate when Chung was born with three diseases.
“We were shocked when doctors told us about Chung’s condition. We don’t know how to get the money to provide our baby with medical treatment. We are already struggling as it is,” Thu said.
Due to the illness and the lack of proper medical treatment, Chung suffers from malnutrition and weighs only 4.8 kilos at the age of 13-months old.
Little baby plagued by several serious diseases
The family mainly relies on a modest income from farming and often suffers from hunger. Now Kien cannot work away from home to earn extra money and his wife, Thuy, has to stay at home to take care of the ill child.
Having no valuable assets, the couple had to struggle to borrow money from any source they could in order to admit their child to the provincial General Hospital.
The child was then sent to the Hanoi Central Pediatrics Hospital because his condition became so bad. They were then compelled to bring their child home a few days later due to lack of money.
Having no mood for Tet
Doctor Nguyen Tri Quy, head of Ha Tinh General Hospital’s Pediatrics Ward said, “The baby’s condition is critical and needs long-term treatment."
Due to their hard life, Kien had to force his first daughter, My, to quit school to save expenses.
Now they owe a combined debt of VND70 million (USD3,312) to local banks and private creditors. They had to sell their only asset, the cow, which itself was bought by using bank loans, to get money to provide their child with medical care.
“They told us that Chung was in need of heart surgery next month, but I don’t know what to do. We can't find anywhere to borrow money,” the father said.
Phan Van Nuoi, head of Yen Giang Hamlet said, “Kien’s family is facing serious economic difficulties and is in desperate need for help."
