An Giang poor commune needs support to replace deteriorating wooden bridge

A deteriorating wooden bridge, at risk of collapse, is significantly affecting the daily commute of over 1,500 households in Long Giang Commune in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang.

Given the financial constraints of the area, local people and authorities are appealing for support to ensure students can reach school safely and residents can conduct business and farming activities with peace of mind.

"People here, especially the students, are longing for a firm concrete bridge to ensure safe travel," said Huynh Ngoc Cuong, Vice Chairman of Long Giang Commune People's Committee, while pointing at the shaky bridge, with main pillars rotted and cracked.

Tran Nhat Khang, a fifth-grade student at Long Giang Primary School B, shared his concerns: "I’ve been crossing this bridge since first grade, but now it shakes a lot, and many planks are rotten. When it rains, my parents tell me to walk my bike across slowly or push it to be safe."

Due to safety concerns, many parents have put their farming work on hold to personally escort their children to school.

"Even for adults, this bridge is nerve-wracking to cross. Early in the morning, workers and farmers sometimes slip and fall because it’s too dark to see," said Phan Van Quen, a 72-year-old local resident.

According to Dantri reporters, local residents mainly rely on agriculture, and this bridge is their primary route for transporting crops.

During harvest season, people must take turns crossing to avoid overloading and causing a collapse. In the rainy season, students often walk their bikes across to prevent slipping, as moss-covered wooden planks become dangerously slick.

Vice Chairman Huynh Ngoc Cuong emphasized that the bridge serves over 1,500 households and more than 1,000 students from two local primary schools.

"Farmers use this bridge to transport goods and food supplies, significantly reducing travel time and costs. However, it has severely deteriorated, and the local government lacks the funds for full reconstruction. Every year, we make temporary repairs to keep it somewhat usable," Cuong stated.

Cho Moi District Vice Chairman Doan Thanh Loc added: "Cho Moi is an island district with a dense network of rivers and canals, making safe transportation crucial. In the past, residents pooled resources to build wooden bridges and relied on volunteer groups for construction work.

"Now that Dantri and An Giang Provincial Police Department are assessing the site and calling for donations to build a concrete bridge, we are thrilled. Replacing the old bridge will greatly improve economic development and daily life for local residents, this is the shared aspiration of our entire district."

The new bridge project is estimated to cost nearly VND800 million (USD32,000). The An Giang Provincial Police will provide labour support, while the Long Giang Commune People's Committee will oversee and ensure the construction stays on schedule.

Local authorities and residents earnestly hope that Dantri readers and donors will contribute to replacing the decaying wooden bridge with a 38-metre-long, 4-metre-wide reinforced concrete bridge, connecting Long Thanh and Long My 1 hamlets in Long Giang Commune, Cho Moi District, An Giang Province.
