Sick Quang Ngai family of four needs help

Despite battling late-stage lung cancer, 57-year-old Nguyen Anh from Quang Ngai Province is worried for his frail 84-year-old mother, a wife with spinal compression, and a son suffering from epilepsy.

In the sweltering heat of April, Nguyen Anh lay motionless on his bed, gasping for breath. His condition had worsened significantly over the past few days.

Sitting by his side, his wife, Nguyen Thi Xuan Ngoc, gently held his hand and shared their story. "He used to work in stone quarrying, a job that exposed him to harsh and hazardous conditions. That likely led to his health deteriorating over the years," she said.

"He was the breadwinner, taking care of me, our sick child, and his elderly mother. I've had spinal compression for eight years and am unable to work. Our son has epilepsy, and his 84-year-old mother is very weak. Even with his declining health, he still tried to keep working."

"Late last year, when he collapsed from exhaustion, we took him to the hospital. After extensive testing, he was diagnosed with lung cancer," Ngoc recalled.

After months of treatment in Ho Chi Minh City, the family had exhausted their savings and borrowed VND40 million (around USD1,570) to continue care.

"Now he's too weak to travel for further treatment, and we've run out of money. I'm trying to sell our small garden plot to repay debts and cover his care," she added.

Nguyen Thi Bich Ra, Vice Chair of the People's Committee of Hanh Duc Commune, Nghia Hanh District, confirmed the family's extremely difficult circumstances.

"Nguyen Anh was the main provider for his family until he became seriously ill. The family has spent heavily on treatment. While local authorities have offered some support, our resources are limited," Ra said.

She called on individuals and charitable organisations to help the family through this crisis.
