Whirlwind damages durian farms in Lam Dong

Heavy rain and a whirlwind swept through a durian-growing area in Lam Dong Province, damaging homes and 37 hectares of orchards, with losses estimated at around VN D8 billion (USD 310,000).

Local authorities said the storm hit at about 9 pm and lasted for more than two hours across a wide area, leaving many residents unable to react in time.

The whirlwind damaged eight houses, three kitchens and several auxiliary structures, while also destroying the stage roof and LED display system at Tien Hoang kindergarten.

Around 37 hectares of durian trees were broken, uprooted or stripped of fruit by strong winds.

Authorities said the losses were particularly severe as many orchards were nearing harvest season.

Local police, militia forces and community organisations were mobilised immediately after the storm to help residents clear fallen trees and repair damaged property.

Provincial authorities are continuing to assess the damage and prepare support measures to help affected households restore production and stabilise their livelihoods.
