Residents in Ninh An Commune, Khanh Hoa Province are complaining a waste treatment factory is burning hazardous solid waste, which is polluting the environment.
Dumpster behind the plant
Khanh Hoa Environment Co. is completing an industrial and hazardous waste treatment plant in the province, but local residents say it is already burning solid waste, creating airborne pollutants.
Nguyen Van Trung, of Ninh Ich Village, said the plant burns waste late at night. "The smell is really strong," he said.
Trung said he has seen trucks marked with "solid waste, hazardous waste" warning logos going into the plant.
Ha Quang Hoa, director of Khanh Hoa Environment, said the plant was not operating, and first startup tests were scheduled to begin in July.
Hoa said the employees were burning normal trash in a dumpster behind the plant, though they had been told not to do so, and promised the practice would be stopped.
"There is some domestic waste generated by the workers, and I think the bad smells are from food scraps," he said.
Hao said trucks badged with hazardous waste warnings did stop at the plant, but they were making rest breaks on the way to HCM City.
