On August 27, while completing Dak Mil Square, a group of workers discovered a tunnel with seven sets of remains. Several items were also found including rubber sandals and explosives. Some of the items were carved with the soldiers' names and one item was carved with the words "liberate the southern region".
The Military Command in Dak Mil arrived at the scene to receive the remains and protect the site. 10 days after extending the search, the authorities found at least 22 remains and the name of five soldiers on the items.
On September 3, the Military Command in Dak Nong collaborated with the local authorities to hold the memorial service and burial ceremony for the soldiers at Dak Mil War Cemetery.
The samples have been sent to the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs for DNA tests.
