A concrete wall collapses during a heavy downpour, crushing a nearby house and killing two people in Long An Province on June 2.

Local authorities reported that a severe thunderstorm struck Thuan Thanh Commune, Can Giuoc District at 1.20 pm on June 2, causing the 8-metre-high perimeter wall to suddenly give way. Large concrete slabs crashed onto the corrugated roof of a neighbouring home, where 58-year-old Le Thi My Le was sheltering from the rain while holding her grandson.

Neighbours rushed to the scene to clear the debris and assist the victims, but both Le and the child had already died. Le’s 32-year-old daughter-in-law, who was standing nearby, sustained serious injuries from the falling concrete. Rescuers took her to hospital for emergency treatment.

Police from Long An Province have cordoned off the site and launched an investigation. They have also handed over the victims’ bodies to the family for funeral arrangements.

Southern provinces in Vietnam have faced intense thunderstorms in recent days, leading to widespread flooding, fallen trees and several weather-related accidents.
