Vietnam wins record four golds at International Physics Olympiad

Vietnam won a record four gold medals and one silver at the 56th International Physics Olympiad, where two students scored perfect marks in the theoretical exam for the first time.

The Ministry of Education and Training said all five members of the national team won medals at the competition, held in Bucaramanga, Colombia, from July 4 to 12.

Vietnam's five-member team won four gold medals and one silver at the 56th International Physics Olympiad

The four gold medallists were Vu Nguyen Nguyen, Nguyen Nhat Minh, Ta Ngoc Minh and Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, while Le Duy Khanh won silver.

Vu Nguyen Nguyen and Nguyen Nhat Minh each scored a perfect 30/30 in the theoretical paper, the first Vietnamese students to achieve the feat in the competition's history.

Vietnam finished among the top seven performing teams, matching its record haul of four golds and one silver set in 2017, but surpassing that performance with two perfect theory scores.

The ministry said the result reflected the students' strong academic foundation, analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities, while highlighting the quality of Vietnam's gifted education programmes.

Three of the five team members are Year 11 students, underlining the depth of Vietnam's talent pipeline for future international competitions. The ministry also noted that Vietnam was one of the few teams with two female contestants.

This year's Olympiad brought together 381 students from 85 countries and territories, who sat separate five-hour theoretical and experimental exams testing their physics knowledge, analytical thinking, problem-solving and practical skills.
