Vietnam to pilot AI education from primary to high school

Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) will begin piloting artificial intelligence (AI) education in schools from primary to high school this December.

The pilot, running from December 2025 to May 2026, will allow the ministry to review results, finalise the AI curriculum framework and plan for wider implementation in later school years.

The proposed framework is built around four core strands aligned with key competencies: human-centred thinking, AI ethics, AI techniques and applications, and AI system design. It aims to provide basic AI knowledge while helping students understand the boundary between technology use and social responsibility, ensuring AI serves human life safely and ethically.

Content is tailored to each school level across two stages: basic education (primary and secondary) and career-orientation education (high school).

Primary pupils will explore AI through simple, intuitive applications, learn that AI is human-created and begin developing awareness of personal data protection. Secondary students will study core concepts such as data and algorithms, practise using AI tools to solve learning tasks, and recognise risks and biases in AI systems. At high school, the focus shifts to creation and career orientation, with students designing simple AI systems, tackling complex problems and exploring technology-related career pathways.

The ministry proposes three delivery methods: integrating AI into computing and STEM subjects, offering elective modules, and providing enhanced activities such as clubs and extracurricular programmes to foster social engagement and specialist collaboration.

The nationwide pilot is part of implementing Politburo resolutions on scientific and technological breakthroughs, national digital transformation, and the National Strategy for AI Development and Application to 2030.

MoET will also trial AI in education management, using tools to support lesson planning and assessment reform to improve teaching and learning efficiency. Feedback on the draft curriculum is being collected from local education departments until November 26, 2025.
