Vietnam rejects US religion report

A Foreign Ministry spokesperson was critical of the US 2010 report on international religion released by the US Department of State on November 18.

A Foreign Ministry spokesperson was critical of the US 2010 report on international religion released by the US Department of State on November 18, saying it was based on misinformation about Vietnam.

Nguyen Phuong Nga made the criticism in response to a correspondent’s query about Vietnam ’s reaction to the department’s comments on religious freedom in Vietnam in its annual report.

The spokeswoman said Vietnamese citizens’ right to belief and religion has been clearly defined in the Constitution as well as respected and exercised in reality.

“It (the exercising of the right) has been recognised by the international community,” Nga emphasised.

“The 2010 Report on International Religious Freedom by the US Department of State has once again been based on one-sided evaluation and misinformation on Vietnam,” she concluded.
