Vietnam records over 1,300 more Covid-19 infections, total tally surpasses 24,000

Vietnam recorded 1,314 new Covid-19 infections on Thursday, raising the total number of patients in the country to 24,385, the Ministry of Health has reported.

According to the ministry's report,1,307 of the newly-confirmed patients are locally-transmitted cases most of whom were detected in quarantine sites or areas under lockdown in some localities including 915 in Ho Chi Minh City, 135 in Binh Duong, 108 in Dong Thap, 28 in Khanh Hoa, 24 in Phu Yen, 17 in Vinh Long, 14 in Quang Ngai, 11 in An Giang, 11 in Ca Mau, nine in Bac Giang, five in Bac Ninh, five in Hanoi, three in Lam Dong, three in Gia Lai, three in Binh Phuoc, two in Bac Lieu, two in Tra Vinh, two in Hung Yen, and one each in Nghe An, Binh Dinh, Tay Ninh, Hau Giang, Kien Giang, Binh Thuan, and Ben Tre.

Ho Chi Minh City continued to report the highest number of new infections in the country. On Wednesday the city also recorded 1,007 new patients, the majority of which are individuals who came into contact with confirmed Covid-19 patients or who were detected in either isolation and locked down areas.

As of Thursday evening, 20,917 locally-transmitted cases have been reported since the new outbreak occurred in the country on April 27, including 9,066 in the virus hotspot of Ho Chi Minh City. The outbreak has so far spread to 57 cities and provinces nationwide.

Seven imported patients are all Vietnamese people who recently returned from abroad. They were sent to quarantine areas in Khanh Hoa, Kien Giang and Tay Ninh provinces upon arrival and are now being treated at local hospitals.

With these new infection cases, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to 24,385 including 22,487 locally-transmitted cases.

As of 6 pm on July 8, a total of 8,950 Covid-19 patients had recovered and been discharged from hospital.

So far there have been 105 deaths, most of them being the elderly with serious underlying diseases.

At present, over 259,000 people who had close contact with Covid-19 patients or returned from virus-hit areas are being monitored at hospitals, quarantine facilities, and at home.

As of July 8, Vietnam has conducted nearly four million doses of Covid-19 vaccine. More than 242,000 people have received two doses of the vaccine.
