Chairman Dang Ngoc Hoa said the airline was preparing an investment proposal for submission to authorities while holding talks with Boeing, Airbus and international aircraft lessors on a combination of purchases and leases.
The expansion plan comes alongside an existing order for 50 next-generation Boeing narrow-body aircraft, due for delivery between 2030 and 2032. Vietnam Airlines also plans to lease about 20 narrow-body aircraft in 2027-2028 to meet short-term demand.
The carrier currently operates about 105 aircraft, including 31 wide-body jets.
Hoa said the global aviation industry continued to face aircraft shortages after the pandemic, making early negotiations with manufacturers and leasing companies essential to secure capacity for future growth.
The new aircraft will help modernise the fleet, improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions and strengthen the airline's competitiveness on international routes.
Chief Executive Le Hong Ha said Vietnam Airlines had launched or announced new routes to Amsterdam, Phuket and Colombo in the first half of the year, while increasing frequencies to Singapore, Manila, Moscow, Kaohsiung, Melbourne and Sydney.
The airline plans to prioritise long-haul markets in Europe and Australia while expanding services in Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, India and China.
Ha said the carrier had also benefited from strong demand on European routes, with seat occupancy reaching about 91 per cent, as some Middle Eastern airlines suspended services due to regional conflict.
Vietnam Airlines said it would continue focusing on business travellers, international passengers and frequent flyers, while Pacific Airlines and VASCO would serve more price-sensitive customers.
