A Vietnam Airlines pilot has been suspended from flying after being tested positive for ketamine.

Speaking with reporters, head of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) Dinh Viet Thang said that the pilot whose name had not yet been disclosed has been suspended from flying.

Information about the pilot from Vietnam Airlines’ Flight Crew Division 919 has gone viral on social networks. On April 25, the division’s medical station conducted a health check, but the pilot refused to be tested for drugs. On the same day, he was sent to Medlatec Hospital’s branch in Hanoi for a test. According to the results, he tested positive for ketamine.

The pilot then showed two kinds of two pain-relief medicines which he had taken without a doctor's prescription. However, a report from Flight Crew Division 919’s medical station concluded that the active ingredients in the two drugs do not contain ketamine, so they did not metabolise into ketamine in the body.

Thang noted that the pilot had been sent to another hospital for checks. If the results indicate that the pilot had used banned substances, his licence would be revoked.
