Speaking at a Sunday meeting, Tien said that 209 cows had died from bloody diarrhoea after being given the Navet-Lpvac vaccine against lumpy skin disease in the Central Highlands province.
"Investigations showed that the vaccine might have caused health problems including coughs, foaming at the mouth, anorexia, and bloody diarrhoea to the cows and led to their death," the official said. "As many as 4,900 out of 9,000 cows and buffaloes have developed these health problems after vaccination. We've taken urgent measures and intensive treatment to save the cows, and deaths have been properly controlled."
The official added that the vaccine was earlier given to beef cows in some other provinces, and no health problems had been reported.
"Maybe the beef cows have better resistance than dairy cows," the official said. "But we're still waiting for genome sequencing results before reaching any conclusions."
Lam Dong Province has 25,000 dairy cows.
