Two fishing boats adrift off Quang Tri, leaving nine missing

Two fishing boats moored at an anchorage in the central province of Quang Tri broke loose and drifted away due to the impact of Typhoon Bualoi, leaving nine fishermen missing.

The incident occurred at 11.30 pm on September 28 at the anchorage in Xuan Loc Hamlet, Bac Gianh Ward, Quang Tri, when strong winds and heavy rain caused fishing vessels BV-92756-TS and BV-92754-TS to snap their moorings and drift away.

At that time, there were 13 fishermen on the two boats. Four among them managed to swim ashore while nine remain missing.

According to initial information, the weather in Quang Tri calmed late on September 28, leading fishermen to believe the storm had passed. They returned to their boats to carry out technical checks, start the engines, cook, and stock up on supplies in preparation for heading out to sea.

By 10.30 pm, as the storm's eye neared the mainland between Quang Tri and Ha Tinh, strong winds, heavy rain, and the rapid flow of the Gianh River caused two fishing boats to come adrift.

Local authorities are searching for the missing.

Typhoon Bualoi has left 12 people missing in the province. The missing include a student swept away by floodwaters in Kim Phu Commune, two crew members from a sunken vessel off Cua Viet, and nine fishermen whose boats broke from their moorings near Gianh Port.

The storm also blew the roofs off 11 houses and caused one house to partially collapse in Quang Tri.
