Two die on national park trip

A student and a parent died on a trip to visit Xuan Thuy National Park in the northern province of Nam Dinh on May 20.

A student and a parent died on a trip to visit Xuan Thuy National Park in the northern province of Nam Dinh on May 20.

According to the initial information, on May 20, a delegation of around 50 people who were students from a private school in Hanoi’s Tay Mo District and their parents visited Xuan Thuy National Park.

The trip was organised by the parents of the class.

During the excursion, the group was taken by a boat to visit a sand bank located between the Red River and the Tra River. Here, students were allowed to catch oysters.

However, while the students were enjoying the activity, tides suddenly rose, sweeping them and their parents away.

The leader of the delegation immediately tried to save the students. After rescuing two successfully, he swam to save another. But he failed and the two were swept away by the violent water.

Some hours later, local authorities found their bodies.

Nguyen Xuan Manh, chairman of Giao Thien Commune in Xuan Thuy District, the water level at the sandy bank was around 50 centimetres, but it would be 3-4 metres high when the tides come in.
