On the days before Tet arrives, traffic is becoming a nightmare with a large number of vehicles transporting bulky items and rushing through the streets.
Demand for traveling and transporting items is high as people rush to make arrangements and deliveries for Tet. The methods of transporting so many items can be dangerous. Huge boxes, very long iron bars, big bonsai trees and more are being loaded onto small vehicles such as bicycles, motorbikes and tricycles which rush through traffic.
There is more noise and congestion on streets, supermarkets, and shopping malls. At any moment, there are numerous vehicles carrying bulky items and rushing through the streets. Traffic jams are a constant around town. One reason that is adding to the mess is that people are backed up trying to avoid overloaded vehicles.
Some of these vehicles carrying large items are causing accidents. Tran Thi Minh, a resident of Phu Nhuan District, Ho Chi Minh City, says that 2 days ago, she and her son were hit by a giant iron bar when travelling on the street. "A driver was carrying a very long iron bar on his shoulder and driving too fast. We were riding our bike in front of him and didn't even notice the iron bar which hit us. Luckily, thanks to riding quite slowly, we only suffered minor injuries," Minh said.
Hoang Van Doan, who lives on No Trang Long Street is fed up with the crazy and unsafe traffic. One day ago, he was run into by another rider who was carrying a very big cushion. "Drivers carrying these large items can kill you any time,” a fed-up Doan said.
