An agreement between ASEAN and six European business organisations aims at tightening business relations between the two regions.

ASEAN-EU 1st Business Summit

A “Memorandum of Understanding”, signed at the first ASEAN-EU business summit, in Jakarta on May 5, aims to strengthen bilateral trade ties between European and Asian nations.

Commissioner De Gucht commented, “I see this initiative as a step forward to enhancing the business dialogue between both regions and contributing to advocate European business interests in the ASEAN region.”

Mr. Jakob Friis Sorensen, Chairman, European Business Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia said that the intention of ASEAN has always been to integrate the countries in the region to facilitate trade, as has been the case with the EU. Adding, now that we see the EU going in directions we might never have expected, we believe that the potential for bilateral trade between the two regions is enormous.

Mr. Alain Cany, Chairman, European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam, said, “EuroCham Vietnam is pleased to broaden its network and services to other EuroCham’s and their members in ASEAN. We believe this will be a useful platform for the European business community to promote their business interests with an even broader voice and on an ASEAN level.”
