A viral video shows Nguyen Duc Bac, a driver from Khanh Linh Trans Company in Hanoi, slowing and stopping his bus carrying 30 Australian tourists when he saw a truck encroaching into his lane on a sharp curve. Thanks to his quick reflexes, the two vehicles came to a stop about one metre apart.
The incident occurred at around 2.15 pm on September 21 during a six-day, five-night tour through Tuyen Quang, Cao Bang and Lang Son provinces. Bac said he initially reduced speed from 60 km/h to 40 km/h before braking to a complete stop, while the truck also halted suddenly.
Recalling the near miss, Bac explained he had prepared two scenarios: stopping the bus or steering into the roadside ditch to reduce the impact. Choosing the first option ensured that all passengers remained safe. After the danger passed, he apologised to his passengers, who responded with applause.
With nearly a decade of experience, Bac said handling such emergencies requires focus, anticipation and accurate risk assessment. He added that his company maintains a shared group where drivers exchange videos on passenger service and safe driving skills, helping them improve their expertise.
