Tornado damages nearly 30 houses in Ha Tinh

Authorities in Ha Tinh Province were working urgently to help residents recover from a tornado that struck the previous afternoon, damaging nearly 30 houses and destroying various household items.

Authorities in Cam Trung Commune, Cam Xuyen District in the central province of Ha Tinh, were working urgently on Friday morning to help residents recover from a tornado that struck the previous afternoon, damaging nearly 30 houses in the area.

Nguyen Van Tien, Chairman of the Cam Trung Commune People’s Committee, said that police officers, youth union members and local militia forces were assisting residents in repairing and re-roofing their damaged homes.

The tornado struck unexpectedly at around 5.30 pm on June 12 following a heavy rainstorm, sweeping through Trung Tien Village in Cam Trung Commune. Nearly 30 homes were partially collapsed or had their roofs torn off, while corrugated metal sheets were blown away and belongings inside many houses were severely damaged.

Since the afternoon of June 12, several areas across Ha Tinh Province have experienced moderate to heavy rain due to the impact of Typhoon Wutip.

According to weather forecasts, central provinces from Quang Binh to Hue and other parts of central Vietnam are expected to see further heavy rainfall on June 13, with totals ranging from 50 to 130 millimetres, and in some locations exceeding 250 millimetres.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, as of 4 am on June 13, the centre of Typhoon Wutip was located at approximately 17.9 degrees North latitude and 108.9 degrees East longitude, over the southern waters of Hainan Island, China.

Maximum sustained winds near the storm’s centre reached 89 to 102 kilometres per hour. The typhoon is moving northwest at about 10 kilometres per hour.

Forecasts indicate that over the next 24 to 48 hours, the storm will shift to a north-northeasterly direction and gradually weaken into a tropical depression over the southwestern region of Guangdong Province, China.
