The fishing boat BL-91719-TS departed a port in Bac Lieu Province on October 25 carrying captain Tran Van Nhieu, 33, and eight other crew members.
At 4.30 pm on December 23, the boat sank in strong wind and high waves while operating at Cung Hau coastal area in Tra Vinh Province.
Six crew members were rescued on the afternoon of December 24 by a fishing boat which was operating in the area. Meanwhile, three others aged 39, 21, and 18 remained missing.
There was strong wind and high waves during the time the boat sank according to some vessels joining in the rescue activities.
