Police in the southern province of An Giang have prosecuted Nguyen Minh Tien, 32, in the neighbouring province of Tien Giang's Cai Lay Town, for murder.
According to the police report, Tien and his wife planned to kill themselves and their two children as they were unemployed and having difficulties in their lives.
They came to An Giang Province and rented a room along with their two children and gave them sleeping pills twice but they did not die.
In their third attempt made on June 15, the couple brought their children to a rented room in Chau Doc Town and gave them enough sleeping pills before taking the pills themselves.
The next morning, the landlord found the woman and her two sons aged nine and six dead while the man was unconscious.
The landlord called the police who rushed the man to hospital. He recovered following some days of treatment.
Police found some empty boxes of sleeping pills inside the room.
Further investigations are underway.
