The statement was given by the deputy minister of health Do Xuan Tuyen at a meeting on the issue held on July 4.

According to a report by the deputy minister at the meeting, a total of 9,397 health workers nationwide have left their jobs at public hospitals and healthcare centres since 2021, including over 5,200 in 2021 and 4,113 in the first half of 2022.

Localities that saw the largest number of health workers leave the profession were Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Dong Nai, Binh Duong, An Giang, and Danang, the report said.

Explaining the situation, the health official pointed out low pay and few support policies to keep especially highly qualified and experienced doctors and nurses.

"A high pressured working environment, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, has also badly affected their physical and psychological health," he said.

Tuyen said that to deal with the situation, the ministry had proposed to the government to raise allowances for health workers and provide better financial rewards for good performance.
