At the meeting, which aimed at introducing non-profit labour export programmes for residents in Thanh Hoa, representatives from the Public Interest Foundation International Manpower Development Organisation (IM Japan) they have provided information on some labour export programmes to South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan.

Speaking at the meeting, Dang Huy Hong, director of the Centre of Overseas Labour, said that Thanh Hoa is leading the country in the number of workers following non-profit labour export programmes, which require no or just a tiny fee from participants.

Hong said that people from low-income families in Thanh Hoa are offered free training when applying for the engineering internship programme in Japan.

Hong added that Thanh Hoa is also seeing a rising number of people going to work in South Korea under the Employment Permit System (EPS) programme, with 15,756 over the past ten years, accounting for 25.60 percent of the country's figure.

Hoang Ngoc Trung, deputy director of the Thanh Hoa Provincial Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, said the province sent 15,129 people to work overseas last year and 7,414 others in the first seven months of this year.

"Overseas workers are sending home USD345 million a year, helping many local families to escape poverty and improve lives," he said.
