The National Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Centre has announced the eye of 2013’s first storm reached the Spratly Islands at 4 am on January 5, bearing winds gusting between 75–88km per hour. Over the next 24 hours, the storm is forecast to travel in a west to southwesterly direction at a speed of 10-15km per hour, positioning itself 320km off Con Dao Island.
It will continue its course during the next two to three days as it slows to 5-10km per hour and is predicted to sit 180km away from Con Dao Island on January 7.
The storm will render seas violently rough in the southern area of the East Sea —including the Spratly Islands—the northern region and the Paracel Islands, and offshore the area between Binh Thuan and Ca Mau provinces.
