Rooftop solar power projects proposed at airports

Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) has proposed installing rooftop solar power at airports with significant electricity demand.

Under the recommendation to the Ministry of Construction, rooftop solar power projects should be implemented at Tan Son Nhat, Noi Bai, Danang, Cat Bi, Phu Bai, Cam Ranh, Phu Quoc and Long Thanh airports.

According to ACV, solar power development projects at these airports were essential. The firm has proposed that aviation authorities provide clear guidelines to ensure legal compliance and alignment with overall planning frameworks.

Earlier, ACV surveyed solar radiation, the average number of sunny days per year, and other practical factors, concluding that utilising solar power potential at these airports is feasible.

ACV added that rooftop solar panels would not interfere with airport operations or aviation safety. They would help reduce roof surface temperatures and lower energy costs for cooling.

Solar power development at airports also helps diversify energy sources and trim operational costs.

According to an aviation expert, several issues need to be considered, including whether glare from solar panels could impact flight safety and which regulations and standards should guide their investment and installation at airports.
