Rising landslides threaten transport infrastructure in Tay Ninh

Tay Ninh Province has recorded nine landslides and subsidence incidents so far this year, damaging rural roads and disrupting transport.

The latest incident occurred on June 10 in Tuyen Thanh Commune, where a 40-metre stretch of road along the Ca Gua Canal collapsed, affecting a key route serving more than 200 households.

Preliminary assessments attributed the collapse to prolonged drought followed by early-season rains that weakened the canal bank and destabilised the soil.

Other incidents included a 91-metre-long subsidence on Thien Ho Duong Road in Kien Tuong Ward on May 25 and a landslide on Kenh Ranh Road later that month. In April, the collapse of part of the Lo Gach River dyke in Vinh Hung Commune damaged around 70 metres of embankment and disrupted traffic.

According to local authorities, most landslides have occurred along roads running beside rivers, canals and waterways, where weak soil conditions and fluctuating water levels make the ground particularly vulnerable.

Many of the roads were built decades ago using soil dredged from nearby canals. Over time, their limited load-bearing capacity and structural stability have become increasingly apparent.

Pham Thi Ngoc Bich, deputy head of Kien Tuong Ward's Economic, Infrastructure and Urban Development Division, said falling water levels and prolonged rainfall had weakened the road foundation, triggering the collapse.

The road had undergone upgrades in 2025 at a cost of about VND 6.5 billion for a 1.8-km section, highlighting the challenges of protecting transport infrastructure in areas with weak geological conditions.

Following the incidents, authorities installed warning signs, restricted heavy vehicles and diverted traffic away from affected areas while conducting assessments and preparing remedial measures.
