Rare slow loris found and released in Lam Dong

A rare pygmy slow loris has been discovered in Lam Dong Province and safely returned to the wild after being handed over to authorities by a local resident.

On March 21, Quang Son Commune Police in Lam Dong Province said they had coordinated with relevant agencies to release the animal back into its natural habitat in line with regulations.

According to police, on March 19, a resident visiting a house in a coffee plantation in Quang Tien Hamlet, Quang Son Commune, unexpectedly found the animal. Recognising it as a wild species, the resident protected it and brought it to the authorities.

The loris weighed 0.5 kilogrammes and was in good health. Scientifically known as Nycticebus pygmaeus, it is listed under group ib in the Vietnam red book, indicating an endangered, rare and protected species.

Earlier, on March 12, another resident in Lam Dong's Nhan Co Commune also discovered a pygmy slow loris weighing about 0.4 kilogrammes while cleaning their home. The animal was also handed over to authorities and later released into the wild.

Local police said such actions help protect endangered wildlife and contribute to conservation efforts in the region.
