On June 16, leaders of Ea So Nature Reserve in Dak Lak Province said the reserve had recorded the presence of a rare population of gaur and wild cattle.
Earlier, Ea So Nature Reserve coordinated with the Centre for Nature Conservation and Development under the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations to carry out a survey and monitoring programme on large ungulate species in the forest area under its management.

According to data recorded from infrared drones and camera traps, automatic cameras installed in the forest, populations of gaur and wild cattle were found living in several areas of Ea So Nature Reserve.
"These species are listed in the Red Book and are under strict protection. We are still compiling and verifying the official number of gaur and wild cattle," a reserve leader said.
Ea So Nature Reserve has stepped up patrols and monitoring in areas where the herd was recorded. It has also introduced a range of measures to ensure a safe habitat and minimise the risk of human disturbance to these rare animals.
Ea So Nature Reserve covers 26,848 hectares, including more than 21,500 hectares of primary forest. The reserve is home to many endangered and rare species of flora and fauna listed in the Red Book, all of which are under close protection.
