The MK82 bomb uncovered on a riverbank after recent floods in Quang Tri Province.

On November 24, police in Ben Quan Commune worked with military units to neutralise the device, which was found on the bank of the Ben Hai River near Cay Tam Hamlet. Local police cordoned off the area, moved nearby households and issued public warnings.

A team from the provincial military command and a bomb clearance organisation arrived shortly after to inspect the site. The bomb was confirmed as an MK82 left from the wartime period. Its location, deep in a rugged and hard-to-access area, made transportation unsafe.

The bomb is safely detonated on November 24.

After discussions, specialists decided to detonate the bomb in place. All residents within the potential impact zone were evacuated before the controlled explosion was carried out successfully and safely.

Also on November 24, authorities in the northern province of Phu Tho safely detonated a 1.2-tonne war bomb which was recently found by residents in the Lo River near Viet Tri Bridge.

According to the Phu Tho provincial military command, it was one of the largest bombs discovered in the area in recent years and posed an extreme danger if mishandled.
