Doctors from the Hanoi-based Vietnam National Hospital of Acupuncture have just sent a letter to Dantri/Dtinews Newspaper calling for financial support from the public to help the poor family save their son.
According to the hospital, Ho Van Thoan, 35, is planning to take his son Ho Bao Huy home, refusing hospital treatment as he has run out of money.
Talking to Dantri/Dtinews, the poor father said that he had sold everything at home and borrowed from everywhere he could to pay the hospital fees for his son, but he’d now run out of all options.
"The doctors here said that my son's condition was improving and he had a chance of recovering," Thoan said. "They have helped connect me to Dantri/Dtinews and I hope people can kindly help me."
Thoan and his wife have six small children and Huy is their fourth child. They live in a small cottage in the mountainous district of Le Thuy, over 600 kilometres from Hanoi. The couple have done odd jobs to support their children but they live in poverty.
Four years ago, Thoan fell off a mountain cliff while working on a farm. After six months in hospital, he was discharged but his health has deteriorated. The family owed hundreds of million VND following his hospital treatment.
The man shared that they had continued to face bad luck when his son developed cerebral palsy.
"Three months ago, Huy started to have a fever that lasted several days but I thought it was just seasonal flu," he remembered. "It was when he fainted that we rushed him to a local hospital where doctors said that he had cerebral palsy and was in critical condition. And he was transferred to the National Children's Hospital in Hanoi."
The father said he had sold everything in their home to raise VND20 million (USD869) to take his son to the Hanoi hospital. His wife also borrowed some more to send to him but he ran out of money after three months.
"We’ve been living on charity meals at the hospital," he said in tears. "As my son has improved, he has been transferred to the Vietnam National Hospital of Acupuncture for further treatment, but I just cannot afford it. I'm thinking of refusing treatment and taking him home."
Doctor Hoang Thi Hai Yen from the Vietnam National Hospital of Acupuncture said that Ho Bao Huy was getting much better after a time being treated at the hospital and he had a good chance of a full recovery. However, the treatment would cost lots of time and money.
