Ho Thi Ty, 34, lives with her husband and their three small children in Quynh Tan Commune, Quynh Luu District. Ty said that her husband can only do some simple manual work due to his mental state. They have a small piece of land to grow rice that can barely supply enough for the family's needs. Their lives have become much more difficult after their three children were born with various health problems.
"My first two sons aged ten and seven were born healthy but both developed epilepsy at the age of one or two," she said. "They suffer frequent seizures and often damage furniture or hurt themselves and their brothers during those times. I had hoped to have a healthy child when I became pregnant with our third child two years ago but he was born with down’s syndrome."
Ty now can only stay home and take care of her ill children. The family depends on the modest income of her husband who is working at a local quarry.
"We're always short of money," she said. "My children need to take regular medicine. They are all malnourished and ill. The seven-year-old weighs only 14 kilos and the two-year-old only five kilos."
Head of the Village 12, Nguyen Canh Te, said that Ty's family is one of the most difficult cases in his area. Local authorities have also provided them some support but they need more help to raise their ill children.
"They've just faced another challenge as their house, which was already deteriorating, collapsed in a recent thunderstorm," the official said. "Ty had to borrow some money from relatives and the banks to build a new house. The house construction has not been completed yet but they had to stop due to running out of money. I hope that they can receive some support to overcome their problems."
