Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has assigned the Ministry of Justice to set up an inter-disciplinary taskforce to tighten control over Vietnamese women marrying foreigners.

The agency is required to submit periodical reports on the situation to the Prime Minister for consideration.

Ministries, agencies and localities have to instruct its officials to co-operate with the taskforce to manage marriages under the requirement of the Ministry of Justice.

According to the Ministry of Justice’s statistics, between 1998 and late December 2010, the ministry approved procedures for 294,280 Vietnamese women to married men from more than 50 countries and territories, mainly China, South Korea, Germany, Canada, France and the US.

Most of women are from the southern region, including Ho Chi Minh City, Bac Lieu, Dong Thap, Hau Giang, Can Tho, Tay Ninh, Soc Trang and An Giang. The northern city of Haiphong is also in the list.

Can Tho city reported nearly 6,300 marriages with foreigners, 60% of them being South Korean citizens, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

According to the Can Tho Women’s Union, the city recorded 25 brides returning home from broken marriages with South Korea men due to differences in language, customs and culture or due to maltreatment.
