One pig of Vuong's family remains safe due to not being vaccinated

Around a week after being vaccinated, 34 pigs experienced fever, dark yellow urine and spots on their skin. Then they gradually all died, leaving losses of VND200 million (USD8,621) for Vuong’s family. The remaining unvaccinated pigs have remained healthy.

According to Tran Thi Xuan also from Hoa Dinh Dong Commune, after being injected with this kind of vaccine, 17 pigs of her pigs died, while 11 others were struggling with fever and anorexia. Those unvaccinated are in normal health.

Nguyen Van Lam, head of Phu Yen Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sub-Department, said that the Navet-AsSFVAC vaccine was produced by the Ho Chi Minh City-based Navetco National Veterinary JSC and licensed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in May this year.

Roughly 600 pigs in Phu Yen have been inoculated with the vaccine. Of them, some 100 pigs at 24 farms died, while 410 others had reactions.

Use of the vaccination has been suspended during the investigation, Lam added. The province has sent samples taken from sick pigs to the Department of Animal Health for testing.

Dao Ly Nhi, deputy director of Phu Yen Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that the local authorities would make the vaccine producer pay compensation if the pig deaths were due to the vaccine.

Affected farmers could also receive compensation if the cause was became clear.
