Cao Thi Phuong is a Grade 12 student at Mai Thuc Loan High School, in Vinh Phong Village in Loc Ha District.
Phuong is taking care of her 86-year-old maternal grandmother and an ailing uncle
Phuong’s father died before she was born. When Phuong was six years old, her mother also died due to cancer. Since then, she has been living with her grandmother Truong Thi Gai, 86, and her uncle Truong Quang Hien, 42.Previously, Gai had to do different kinds of work to support the family. But now, she is facing many health problems, so remains at home. Meanwhile, Hien has mental problems.
The three mainly live thanks to support from their neighbours and the locality’s subsidy for the poor.
The family lives in a ramshackle house which can collapse at any time
Two years ago, the house was severely flooded in heavy rain. They were evacuated to ensure safety.
After school, Phuong tries to catch oysters and crabs to earn some money. Her dream is to go to university.
