Northern Vietnam set for late-season cold spell

Northern Vietnam is expected to experience the final cold air intrusion of the season, bringing heavy rainfall and a sharp end to the current heatwave, according to the national weather agency.

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that on June 7, northern provinces, areas from Thanh Hoa to Danang, and eastern parts of the region stretching from Quang Ngai to Dak Lak would continue to experience hot to extremely hot weather, with temperatures ranging from 36 to 38 degrees Celsius.

According to forecasters, from the evening of June 8 through June 9, the influence of a late-season cold air mass will trigger widespread moderate to heavy rainfall across Northern Vietnam, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces.

Rainfall totals are forecast to reach 30-80mm in many areas, with isolated locations receiving more than 200mm.

The provinces of Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Lao Cai and Son La, along with western areas of Phu Tho Province, are expected to see the heaviest rainfall, with totals of 60-120mm and isolated locations potentially exceeding 250mm.

Meteorologists warned that Northern Vietnam, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An face a high risk of thunderstorms, whirlwinds, hail and strong gusts. Mountainous areas in the north should remain alert for flash floods and landslides.

For the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam, scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast over the next two days, with some locations likely to experience heavy rain. Elsewhere, isolated showers and thunderstorms may occur during the evening and night, while daytime conditions will remain sunny.
