Nghe An police arrest five suspects in cross border bride trafficking

Nghe An Provincial Police Department has dismantled a human trafficking ring and arrested five suspects accused of luring a woman abroad to be sold as a bride.

Police said on January 30 they coordinated with Muong Ai Border Guard Station to successfully crack a cross border human trafficking case, arresting five people involved in the ring.

Luong Thi Chien, 47, was identified as the ringleader. The accomplices include Nguyen Van Phong, 56, Nguyen Thi Diu, 44, Luong Thi Hoa, 57, and Lo Thi Nhan, 48.

Investigators determined the group trafficked a woman from Nghe An's Muong Tip Commune and sold her abroad for VND 90 million (approximately USD 3,600). They gave the victim’s family VND 20 million (approximately USD 800) and shared the remaining VND 70 million (approximately USD 2,800).

According to police, Chien had colluded with contacts across the border since early 2011. The group targeted women in difficult circumstances and without stable jobs, luring them abroad under false promises to become wives.

The victim has been successfully rescued. The Criminal Police Division is expanding the investigation and has urged other victims to come forward to report related cases.
