Newborn elephant spotted in Danang conservation area

A newborn wild elephant has been captured on camera in Danang’s Elephant Species and Habitat Conservation Area, signaling a positive step forward in Vietnam’s wildlife conservation efforts.

The newborn elephant spotted through images taken by camera traps installed in the protected forest in Danang City.

Mai Van Duong, Director of the conservation area, told Dantri on July 26 that the baby elephant was spotted through images taken by camera traps installed in the protected forest.

“Earlier this year, local forest patrol members reported signs suggesting the presence of a newborn elephant,” Duong said. In response, the management board installed 30 camera traps across 15 locations where elephant herds frequently move, though no results were recorded at first.

Undeterred, the team repositioned the camera traps in more promising locations. Between July 20 and 23, the breakthrough came: images clearly showed a baby elephant walking beside its mother.

“The sight of the calf playfully following its mother was a heartwarming reward for our relentless forest protection efforts,” Duong shared.

He said the discovery is a highly encouraging sign of natural reproduction within the herd of wild Asian elephants living in the reserve.

“This signals that our conservation strategy is on the right track and contributes to the protection of the endangered Asian elephant,” Duong noted.

A similar event occurred in 2020, when a one-year-old calf was documented thanks to the USAID-funded Green Annamites Project. The current herd in the area now has a complete social structure, including adult males, females, and calves.
