Thousands had gathered at Thuan An estuary for the Cau Ngu (Fishing) Festival in Thai Duong Ha Village, Thuan An Ward. While crossing the Tam Giang Lagoon to follow the race, the vessel overturned unexpectedly.

Nine people were rescued and brought safely ashore by local residents and emergency forces. A 25-year-old woman and her three-year-old son drowned.
Local authorities visited the bereaved family and provided support.
The Cau Ngu Festival of Thai Duong Ha Village is held every three years in the first lunar month, when fishermen pray for favourable weather and abundant catches.
The event draws large crowds, particularly for the traditional boat race on Tam Giang Lagoon, a hallmark of local lagoon culture.
