Deputy director of Binh Dinh Police Department, Huynh Bao Nguyen, said Monday afternoon that they had arrested Ho Thanh Cuong, 34, for attacking his family members, leaving two dead and one seriously injured.
According to a police report, the incident occurred on October 30 when Ho Thanh Cuong used a knife to attack his brother Ho Quoc Nhat, 42, father Ho Huu Canh, 83, and mother Truong Thi Du, 73, at their home in An Nhon Town.
The brother and father died on the spot while the mother suffered from serious injuries.
"We've detained Cuong and carried out an autopsy on the bodies," the police said.
A local resident, Nguyen Thi Gai, said that it was raining heavily at that time and she heard screams from the house of Ho Huu Canh.
"I came out to see Canh lying motionless in the yard," she said. "Some people were trying to stop Cuong when he was stabbing his mother. It was a horrible scene."
According to some neighbours, Cuong used to be a smart man and he had graduated from a university in HCM City. He has developed mental problems since last year and was receiving treatment.
A representative from An Nhon Town Healthcare Centre said that Cuong has received regular treatment for mental problems since 2022.
Binh Dinh Provincial Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs said that the only centre for mentally-ill patients in the province did not have the capacity to admit new patients.
