
Most of the occupational accidents occurred in construction
Addressing a press meeting held on April 11, head of the ministry's Labour Safety Department, Ha Tat Thang announced that there would be a dialogue between the National Council for Labour Safety and Hygiene and enterprises, a seminar discussing experience in work-related accidents and preventive measures, and a training course on health care for health workers.
"Labour safety and hygiene inspections will be launched at 10 construction sites and eight groups and corporations nationwide," he added.
According to a report released by the ministry at the meeting 7,997 work-related accidents occurred nationwide in 2018, taking the lives of 1,039 labourers and leaving 1,939 others injured.
Localities which saw the highest number of work-related accident fatalities in the year included Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Hai Duong, Thai Nguyen, Yen Bai, Dong Nai, Quang Ninh, Ca Mau, Quang Nam and Binh Duong provinces.
Most of the occupational accidents occurred in construction, building materials production, metallurgical engineering, and other fields.
Employers were responsible for nearly 46.5 percent of all occupational accidents, in which their failure to build safe working practices for employees accounted for 24.56 percent of the incidents and their failure to fully train safe working practices for employees accounted for 7.2 percent. Workers alone were responsible for just 18.42 percent of accidents.
In 2018, 2 million workers took periodical health examinations. Occupational deafness was found in 66.6 percent of the workforce, followed by silicosis (16.8 percent), and occupational chronic bronchitis (9.9 percent).
