Massive rocks fall onto Quang Ngai road

Several large rocks weighing tonnes tumbled from a cliff onto a road in the central province of Quang Ngai, threatening passersby.

Road 627C, which links Ba To and Dang Thuy Tram communes, is a winding and steep route, with cliffs on one side and deep ravines on the other. Over the past week, dozens of landslide spots have appeared along the route, causing rocks to tumble from the cliffs and endangering road users.

Nguyen Tuan Tu, a trader from Dang Thuy Tram Commune, said he often travels on the road to buy goods for resale. He noted that Road 627C is challenging to navigate with its winding slopes and is plagued by dangerous landslide spots.

“After only a few downpours, landslides have sent rocks falling onto the road. Once the rainy season arrives, it will get worse, and the road could be cut off,” Tu said.

On the stretch from Dang Thuy Tram Commune centre to Bui Hui grassland alone, six landslide spots have appeared. Rocks measuring 0.5 to 2 metres in diameter have fallen onto the road, including some weighing tonnes that now block traffic.

At the rockfall sites, the concrete road surface has cracked, and heavy impacts have damaged the guardrails. Along several sections of the route, large rocks jut from the cliffs, threatening to fall at any moment.

Nguyen Thi Van, chairwoman of Dang Thuy Tram Commune, said excavators had been brought in to remove the fallen rocks, while warning signs were also erected.

The commune has petitioned the Quang Ngai authorities to direct relevant departments and agencies to find solutions to prevent further landslides along Road 627C.
