Mass fish die-off on Dong Nai River

Authorities in Bien Hoa City are investigating a mass fish die-off in the Dong Nai River, where around six tonnes of farmed fish died following a torrential downpour on May 28.

Farmers reported the deaths in floating cages along the river section running through Long Binh Ward. Most of the dead fish were tilapia, carp, catfish, hemibagrus, silver carp and grass carp.

Residents said the fish showed signs of suffocation before dying en masse. Some believe the sudden influx of upstream rainwater altered the river’s aquatic environment, possibly triggering the incident.

The Long Binh Tan Ward People’s Committee sent staff to assess the damage and is working with relevant authorities to determine the cause. Officials also mobilised teams to help farmers collect the dead fish and reported the incident to management agencies.

Floating cage farmers first reported the fish deaths in the Thai Hoa neighbourhood.

An investigation is ongoing.
