Hanoi police have officially indicted a man for illegally transporting goods and currency across borders, following his attempt to carry a large sum of Japanese yen through Noi Bai International Airport.

According to the General Department of Customs, authorities at Noi Bai airport grew suspicious of passenger Nguyen Huu Lam during exit procedures for flight VN310 to Narita, Japan, at 10.20 pm on June 8.

Upon screening his carry-on baggage and conducting a physical inspection, customs officers discovered an envelope hidden in his suitcase containing a significant amount of suspected foreign currency.

Preliminary checks revealed 690 banknotes, each with a face value of 10,000 Japanese yen, concealed in the luggage. The currency had not been declared to customs, and Lam failed to present any legal documentation for its transport as required by law.

Hanoi police have since launched criminal proceedings against Nguyen Huu Lam for illegally transporting goods and currency across national borders.
