A magnitude 3.8 earthquake struck the northern mountainous Dien Bien Province's Dien Bien District yesterday evening, according to the local earthquake observation station.

The tremor caused anxiety among many local residents, though there were no losses or injuries reported, head of the station, Nguyen Thai Son, said, adding that the quake measured 4 on the 12 point MSK-64 scale.
He added that the epicenter was some 14-15km from Dien Bien Phu city.
The Medvedev-Sponheuer-Karnik scale, also known as the MSK or MSK-64, is a macroseismic intensity scale used to evaluate the severity of ground tremors on the basis of observed effects in the area of an earthquake.
