Dalat currently has some 2,550 hectares of greenhouses which cover over 50 percent of the agricultural land of the city.

Lam Dong has set a target to reduce the area used by greenhouses by 20 percent by 2025 and no greenhouses in the Dalat central area by 2030.

To realise the target, the Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee has proposed that the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) provide a loan package of VND 4.82 trillion at preferential interest rate. The money will be used to switch from greenhouse to outdoor cultivation using high technologies.

The committee wants the SBV to direct commercial banks in the area to support local farmers with preferential interest-rate loan packages to carry out the project.

Statistics showed that Dalat currently has some 2,550 hectares of greenhouses which cover over 50 percent of the agricultural land of the city. They are now being used mainly for growing vegetables and flowers. Some have even been built on hills and mountains.

According to experts, fast-growing greenhouse development in the tourist city has badly affected its scenery and caused environmental problems including flooding and landslides in the area.

The dense greenhouses have caused shortages of groundwater and affected drainage flows, leading to floods and landslides occurring more often in the city.
