A police officer in the northern province of Vinh Phuc has just been arrested after kidnapping a seven-year-old boy in Hanoi.

Nguyen Duc Trung, 31, was arrested on August 15 in Ha Nam Province after receiving a ransom of VND15 billion (USD627,880) from the family of a seven-year-old boy he kidnapped a day earlier in Hanoi.
Reports from Hanoi police said that Trung drove a car to the Viet Hung Urban Area in Long Bien District on the afternoon of August 14 and grabbed the boy who was riding a bike near his home.

The kidnapper then contacted the boy's parents and demanded a ransom of VND15 billion (USD627,880).
Some 200 Hanoi police officers were mobilised to hunt for the suspect after being informed of the kidnapping by the boy's parents. Trung constantly changed the location to receive the money and used various fake car number plates for his car, making it hard for police officers to trace him.
At the Dong Van Industrial Park in Ha Nam Province, some 60 kilometres from Hanoi, Trung asked the boy’s mother to walk to the site to hand over the money. After checking the amount, he freed the boy and drove away.
He was later besieged, where he shot at police officers, injuring one.
At the police station, Trung confessed that he had got into debt, so he decided to kidnap the boy to raise money.
Deputy director of Hanoi Police Department, Nguyen Thanh Tung, told the Vietnamnet Newspaper on Wednesday evening that Nguyen Duc Trung, who was a senior lieutenant working for the traffic police department in Vinh Phuc Province had been dismissed from the force following his offence.
