Homemade ‘formula 1' car performs in streets of Hanoi

A home-made vehicle resembling a F1 car could be seen travelling very fast down Hanoi’s Nguyen Van Cu Street on August 4.

A home-made three-wheeled vehicle resembling a formula 1 car could be seen travelling very fast down Hanoi’s Nguyen Van Cu Street on August 4.

The vehicle had a petrol tank was made out of recycled water bottles, and was equipped with a motorbike engine. The shell was made of cardboard boxes.

According to Lieutenant-Colonel Nguyen Huu Tam, head of Hanoi Police’s traffic police group No. 5, said, “On the morning of August 4, I noticed such a strange vehicle while I was on duty at Nguyen Van Cu-Ngo Gia Tu-National Highway No. 5 T-junction. At the time, the vehicle was moving the wrong way down National Highway No. 5. Traffic police ordered the driver to stop, but he continued to drive at a high speed.”

After a chase, police managed to stop the vehicle. The driver was 24-year old Ha Xuan Truong, from Phu Tho Province.

Tam said that the car is around two metres long and weighs about 60 kilos.

Do Xuan Hung, the owner of a motorbike repair shop on Nguyen Van Cu Street, Long Bien District, also owns the strange vehicle. Hung said that it was designed specifically for a racing competition to be held in the norther province of Vinh Phuc. Truong, who was caught driving the car, was asked by his boss to test the vehicle.

Tam said that driving these types of vehicles poses a great safety hazard. The car was impounded by police.
