Heavy rains after Typhoon Bualoi force widespread school closures

Schools across multiple Vietnamese localities closed on September 30 as torrential rains from Typhoon Bualoi swept the region.

Late on September 29, the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai Department of Education and Training announced that approximately 465,000 students from preschool to vocational schools would stay home on September 30, with any further closures depending on weather conditions and official guidance.

Schools in Thanh Hoa Province remained closed today, September 30, to cope with the aftermath of Typhoon Bualoi.

Doai Phuong Commune in Hanoi suspended all kindergarten and primary classes on September 30, with lessons to be scheduled later.

Most schools in Nghe An, Ninh Binh and Thai Nguyen had already closed since September 29.

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting warned that Typhoon Bualoi’s circulation will keep lashing northern provinces, including Lao Cai, with heavy rain that could trigger flooding, flash floods and landslides, particularly in mountainous areas.

Between September 28 and 29, Lao Cai experienced 70-150mm of rain, with some areas recording over 250mm, triggering flash floods and landslides.

The Ministry of Education and Training has instructed local authorities in storm-hit areas to strictly manage boarding and semi-boarding students, ensuring they have sufficient food and water while staying at school.

Schools are urged to relocate assets and documents to higher floors to avoid flood damage, especially in remote areas, and to regularly update and report any losses to provincial authorities and the ministry for consolidation before submitting them to the government.
