Heavy rain triggers landslides, forces evacuation in Son La

More than 200 residents were evacuated after heavy rain triggered landslides and flash floods that blocked National Highway 6 and inundated homes in Son La Province.

Heavy rain on on Wednesday night caused streams to overflow, sending mud and debris onto National Highway 6 through Muoi Noi and Thuan Chau communes, disrupting traffic and flooding homes along the route.

Local authorities mobilised emergency teams overnight to evacuate residents from danger zones, issue warnings and divert traffic. Motorists were urged to avoid flooded and landslide-prone sections of the highway.

The provincial Fire Prevention, Firefighting and Rescue Police Department deployed 60 officers along with rescue vehicles, troop carriers and command vehicles to assist evacuation efforts.

Traffic police set up warning signs and diverted vehicles to alternative routes, while local police and authorities inspected areas at risk of flooding and landslides.

Priority was given to evacuating elderly people, children and vulnerable residents, while emergency teams also helped move property and livestock to safer locations.

As many as 40 households received assistance in moving belongings and more than 200 people were evacuated. The emergency response phase was completed by about 1.30 am on Thursday, and National Highway 6 over Chieng Pac Pass reopened to traffic at around 6.20 am.
